Will your bank statement pass a UK student visa check?

Quick answer

Your bank statement must show the required maintenance funds held for 28 consecutive days, ending no more than 31 days before your application date — and the money can't dip below the required level for even one day. Most refusals aren't about not having the money; they're about the statement failing these format and consistency rules. Grid Report checks your statement against them in about two minutes, before you pay your visa fee.

What UK caseworkers actually check on your statement

A UKVI caseworker isn't reading your statement like an accountant. They're running down a short list, looking for a reason to refuse:

The 28-day rule. The full required amount — first-year tuition (minus anything already paid) plus living costs — must sit in the account for 28 consecutive days. If your balance dipped below the threshold on day 19, even for a few hours, the application can be refused. This single rule catches more Nigerian applicants than any other.

The 31-day freshness rule. The closing date on your statement must be within 31 days of the date you apply. A statement that's perfect but five weeks old gets your application thrown out on a technicality.

Large deposits with no story. A lump sum landing right before your 28-day window opens reads as borrowed money parked to impress. UKVI can refuse under "genuineness" concerns even when the balance is sufficient. If a big deposit is legitimate — a parent's transfer, a land sale, salary — it needs supporting evidence.

In-and-out movement. Money that arrives and leaves again suggests the account was topped up for the application. Caseworkers are specifically trained to spot this pattern.

Whose account it is. The account must be yours or your parent's/legal guardian's (with proof of relationship and a consent letter). A statement from an uncle or sponsor who isn't a recognized financial sponsor doesn't count, no matter the balance.

What Grid Report checks for the UK route

Upload your statement and we assess it the way a caseworker would:

  • Whether your funds meet the 28-day consecutive-hold pattern, flagging any dip
  • Whether the statement period and closing date fit the 31-day freshness window
  • Every large deposit that needs an explanation, named specifically
  • In-and-out movement that could trigger genuineness doubts
  • Whether the statement format (bank name, account holder, dates, stamps) matches what UKVI accepts from Nigerian banks — GTBank, Access, Zenith, UBA, Opay, Moniepoint and others, including password-protected PDFs

You see proof we've read your statement before you pay a naira. Then you get a readiness score, every flag in plain English, and exactly what to do about each — on screen and as a PDF in your email.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need to show for a UK student visa from Nigeria?+
Your unpaid first-year tuition plus living costs: £1,529/month (up to 9 months, £13,761 total) if studying in London, £1,171/month (£10,539 total) outside London. The exact figure depends on your CAS. What Grid Report checks is whether whatever amount you need was held correctly — the 28-day pattern is where applicants fail, not the arithmetic.
Can I use my parent's bank statement?+
Yes — with your birth certificate proving the relationship and a signed consent letter. The same 28-day and red-flag rules apply to their statement.
Does UKVI accept Opay, Moniepoint or Kuda statements?+
UKVI requires statements from regulated financial institutions showing the account holder, dates, and balances. Official app-generated statements from licensed Nigerian fintechs generally include these — but formatting issues are common, which is exactly what a pre-check catches before a caseworker does.
My statement is password-protected. Is that a problem?+
Not for us — most Nigerian bank statements are. You enter the password during upload; we use it once and never store it. For your actual application, submit an unlocked version.
Will this guarantee my UK visa?+
No, and no honest tool would claim that. UKVI makes the decision. What we do is make sure your bank statement — the most common financial reason for refusal — isn't the thing that sinks it.

Don't lose your visa fee to a statement problem you could have fixed.
